What does a good resume look like?

Name and contact details on each page (as a header or footer), ensure all your most important detail lies on the first page, i.e. include your entire (relevant) career history summarised in a table, then your qualifications, your professional associations/memberships and finally your major career achievements. The 2nd/3rd page outlines your Career History (expanded) where you are able to list your key responsibilities and achievements in each role. Finally, offer your referee’s available on request, or even a quote from them

How would I find a CFO/Finance person?

CFO talent can be found from any industry sector, although it is helpful if the Finance person has both solid management accounting and statutory experience. Invest plenty of time in sound references and verifications. Criminal checks are critical as this role is a pivotal role in an organisation. This is where a search firm may be helpful.  If your company is in manufacturing then knowledge of inventory management, cost of goods and forecasting will be important. We like accountants who have worked in both a large disciplined consultancy and a hands-on mid-sized business to understand business dynamics.

Who do I put as my referees?

Referee’s should always be someone who has worked above you as a manager or higher (an owner/director). Some people make the mistake believing that a referee can be a peer or friend; this often leads to biased responses and not a clear or accurate way of how you are as an employee. Referee’s are not there to make you look bad, moreover, they are able to provide insight to your next employer on how best to manage you etc.

How do I tell my boss I feel undervalued?

Firstly spend some time processing your feelings before telling your boss – are there personal situations that may be affecting how you’re feeling at work? If not, ask to speak privately and confidentially with your boss and explain the issue(s) by outlining examples or incidences where you have felt undervalued. Explain that you want to move past this so you are able to be more productive at work.

How to tell my boss that I have too much work?

Firstly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Workloads can very easily implode and discussing this with your boss can be uncomfortable. Be honest. Set priorities with your boss, understand what is critical and what is not. To-do lists are an excellent way to manage time (and expectations).
