Building Resilience at Work

 

During these unprecedented times, it can be tempting to sit it out and freeze any decisions for your team.  Depending on your industry – as some have most definitely been hit harder than others – it might very well be an excellent opportunity to review your business strategy and the team that you have in place to achieve it.

Have you noticed that some of your people are in a constant state of overwhelm and are less productive than usual?  Or potentially you’ve noticed that some members of your team have risen to the challenge and are looking for opportunities to improve the business through the COVID crisis?

Perhaps your decision to freeze any staffing decision making is causing unfair stress on your highest performing team members? 

We have not had a recession in 28 years so we have found finding an Aussie case study not so relevant so we have included this inspirational story:

Plus, he wanted to maintain the vast majority of his staff when the recession ended. Now is a similar time!  Now is the time to make those hard calls. Now is the time to look for incredible talent. We are seeing some incredible people, who at no fault of their own are out looking for a new career opportunity. They are ready and willing to make a HUGE contribution and are open to contracting so you as an Employer can try before you decide to make a long term hire.

Wouldn’t it be good to look back on these COVID times as a time you made smart hiring decisions that led to amazing outcomes?

How do I answer personal questions in interviews?

This question is asked so interviewers can peel back some layers and get to know the person behind the “corporate suit”. If you feel comfortable, answer the question honestly, i.e. I enjoy running marathons or relaxing by the beach with friends and family. If you eventually get the job, they will most likely find out these things about you then anyway. Be careful not to share information about yourself that could create a negative unconscious bias towards you… Such as if you like to go boxing… be careful that you are not sharing this with someone who hates boxing.

How would I find a CFO/Finance person?

CFO talent can be found from any industry sector, although it is helpful if the Finance person has both solid management accounting and statutory experience. Invest plenty of time in sound references and verifications. Criminal checks are critical as this role is a pivotal role in an organisation. This is where a search firm may be helpful.  If your company is in manufacturing then knowledge of inventory management, cost of goods and forecasting will be important. We like accountants who have worked in both a large disciplined consultancy and a hands-on mid-sized business to understand business dynamics.

What type of person would I need to grow my digital sales for a franchise company?

 The unique nature of digital sales requires insights into consumer buying patterns, weekly consumer buying trends, SEO and SMO knowledge. Digital natives( born after 1998) are best for execution and tactics. Ask for referrals from fellow business owners and/ or use an Executive Search company that fully understands the consumer markets that have access to Digital Sales & Marketing professionals. It is best to find verified talent to ensure you get traction fast and not just do a “ Social media dance” and waste time and efforts without actually seeing digital hits convert to actual sales

How would I find an experienced marketing manager for a franchise company?

 

Marketing talent is often hidden – good marketeers are often doing a good job somewhere else and are hard to find. They maybe in an agency or working on the client-side. Digital natives are best, (born after 1998) for execution and yet it is helpful to have wise counsel of more experienced marketers to guide strategy, demographics and set direction. 

You may put the experienced marketeers on contract and utilise their big thinking on a few days a week. People who have strong exposure to direct to consumer marketing is best, working for B to C companies.

Because of the unique nature of franchise relationships, it could be helpful to use an Executive Search company that fully understands the intricacies of those relationships to find a Marketing Manager that also understands what franchise partners respond best to.

Who do I put as my referees?

Referee’s should always be someone who has worked above you as a manager or higher (an owner/director). Some people make the mistake believing that a referee can be a peer or friend; this often leads to biased responses and not a clear or accurate way of how you are as an employee. Referee’s are not there to make you look bad, moreover, they are able to provide insight to your next employer on how best to manage you etc.
